Established in 1975 with just seven orphaned elephants, this 25-acre sanctuary has transformed from a tourism attraction into a vital hub for education, research, and conservation. It now houses the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. Next, you'll head to Habarana for a delightful village tour, where you'll have the chance to experience local life up close. Your journey through Sri Lanka continues with a visit to Dambulla. Perched 1,118 feet above sea level, the Dambulla Rock Temple is renowned as one of the most impressive cave temples on the island. Originally constructed by King Walagamba in the first century B.C., this five-cave complex showcases the largest collection of cave paintings in the world, featuring over 2,000 square meters of intricately painted walls and ceilings.

Within the temple, you'll find a remarkable statue of the Buddha, carved directly from rock, which is the largest of more than 150 Buddha statues housed in the shrine.

Following your exploration of Dambulla, you'll head to Matale, where you'll visit a local spice garden. Here, you can discover the various spices that Sri Lanka is famous for, watch a culinary demonstration, and gain insights into the cultivation and processing of these aromatic ingredients. After breakfast, set off for the stunning Knuckles mountain range, also referred to as the "Dumbara Mountain Range," located between the Kandy and Matale districts. This breathtaking area is known for its diverse ecosystems, where the lowland regions receive about 2,500 mm of rainfall annually, while the highlands can receive up to 5,000 mm.

As you explore the Knuckles, you'll discover that it has been designated as a strict natural reserve, preserving a unique array of endemic flora and fauna not found anywhere else in the world. After your visit to this remarkable region, continue your journey to Kandy, soaking in the beauty of the landscape along the way.

Tucked away in the stunning landscapes of tea plantations, Nuwara Eliya is a charming resort town often referred to as "Little England." Embark on a city tour to explore its iconic sites, including the renowned Pink Post Office, picturesque tea estates, lush golf courses, the Hakgala Botanical Gardens, and vibrant Hindu temples.

In the evening, indulge in various water activities at Lake Gregory, where you can relax and soak in the serene surroundings.

Set out early for Horton Plains National Park, located about 2,134 meters above sea level in the Central Province near Nuwara Eliya. This expansive area features misty grasslands, twisted trees, and chilly streams. Don’t miss the stunning viewpoint known as World’s End, which offers breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding landscape.

You can also admire the picturesque Baker’s Falls and spot various wildlife, including sambur deer, leopards, and endemic bear monkeys. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010, Horton Plains is a treasure for nature lovers. On your way back, stop by a New Zealand farm in Ambewela. In the evening, enjoy some leisure time shopping in the charming town of Nuwara Eliya.

After enjoying a hearty breakfast, you will head to Udawalawe National Park. In the afternoon, embark on a thrilling half-day jeep safari through this stunning national park, established in 1972. Nestled between the Udawalawe Reservoir and the Walawe River, the park is framed by the majestic mountains of Balangoda, Kalthota, and Haputale.

Udawalawe is renowned for its vibrant elephant population, where you can witness herds of elephants, including playful calves, as they bathe and graze. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife, such as spotted deer, sambur, barking deer, gray langurs, water buffalo, and jackals.

Birdwatchers will delight in the rich avian diversity, with species like peacocks, hawk eagles, white-bellied sea eagles, black-capped bulbuls, Malabar pied hornbills, white-necked storks, open-billed storks, white ibises, forest nightingales, stork-billed kingfishers, and serpent eagles populating the area.
